Selection pressure turns benchmarks into fingerprints

I've spent the last year watching teams celebrate benchmark deltas that don't survive contact with prod. A model jumps twelve points on some leaderboard, everyone high-fives, and then it fumbles the actual task it was hired for. I used to blame the benchmark — too narrow, too synthetic, whatever.
